Fix the error "A contact group with that name already exists."
It happens every time I log in!! :( It is seemingly creating a group out of one of the users who used to be on my contact list.
Go to skype remove all SIP:... Groups. Then go to relationship tab and search for all contacts with the status ? unknown (all you had the sip groups from). right-click ->change privacy relationship -> Auto-assign relationship. now the most of your contacts should be removed.
Sync Outlook. Close Skype. Sync outlook again. Open Skype. Now the groups should be gone.
If one of your groups reappears, the contact had a different state in the relationship tab. So do the job again. remove the sip group. on the relationship tab search for the person directly (state might be everything). do the same for the account again. right click -> change privacy relationship -> re-assign relationship.
Now its different --> the contact will now be removed from the relationship tab but appear as unkown presence in the status tab and groups tab. go to one of these tabs and remove the user from contact list. then sync outlook again. close skype. better sync outlook again. and now all the sip: groups should be gone.
Worked for me :) Hope this helps
I have found a fix, Close down Skype for business and (file sign out and File exit) Ensure lync.exe is not running in task manager
Log into Outlook Web App if you dont need the url ask your admin or from outlook 2013 select File > then under account settings Access this account from the web. If OWA is not enabled an exchange admin willl need to enable it.
Once logged into OWA (ensure outlook full client is closed).
From Outlook Web Access Select people search for the contacts and delete them from here.
Once the contacts have been delete
Create a shortcut to %Appdata%
Delete the file AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\Accountprofiles.dat
Delete or rename the folder AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\SIPusername
Re-launch Skype the dodgy contacts are gone and if they had presence unknown they can now be added successfully
Same here - any updates?
To everybody who is unable to remove the contact from the relationship tab: please try twice. To me, the first time I choose delete it simply doesn't do anything. But if I give the command again the contact gets properly deleted.
Thanks for work-around!
I hope there will be a real solution one day as with a long long contact list it is not always obvious when people disappear from the organisation.
So the message is set to return ...

Anyone know how to remove the contact the from the relationship tab? When I right click here I only have the option to 'Remove from Contacts List' and I have deleted the associated groups under the 'Group' tab.
Still getting this issue, unable to remove the person from the relationships tab.

"The fix for this is to remove the contacts from the relationship tab. Then you can then delete the group."
I still encounter this issue after using this method. When I exit skype, I didn't find the process in the task manager. I even restarted my pc... when I open skype again, The annoying SIP..... appeared again. I already delete them thousands of times. Is there any other solution? Please help me:(
Thank you for the solution ppl. this works..
Solved for me.
In Skype for Business,
Click on Relationships.
scroll and find contacts with status (Presence unknown),
in my sort, they are completely down before external contacts.
I noticed that those contact just left the company.
right click on the latter and click on "remove from contact list".
Then click on tab "Group"
scroll down until "SIP:xx", you will find same contacts but as a group.
Right click on them and delete.
go in Task Manager
issue should have been solved.
Had this annoying issue also and here i finally read the solution. First remove the relationsip and then the group. Thanks!

I have been having this issue since a coworker left in February. Thank you to everyone who said that removing them from the relationships tab was the solution. I did this, then signed out & exited the program and reopened. I did not get the alert this time!
Yah...@Brian Rivers - Super Star... Thank you....My IT Adminstrator couldn't work it out..funny how something so little ..can be soooooo iritating every morning...
Made my day..
Even I am also facing this issue. The issue started when Lync was migrated to Skype for Business in my organisation.
Dear MS. We have the same in our company now. I spoke to the global operations and they said the ticket is with MS support for months with no progress. We have more and more people affected (dozens reported)...
Sriously. any progress? Feedback from the MS would be nice...
And guys, please do ma a favour and stop calling poor workarounds like the one below "solutions" okay? This is only calming folks from MS down, while they should get a grip and SOLVE it - this is not free-of-charge Skype... BTW. It did not work for me and 3 other people neither. Even if it would, I wouldn't mind, but I won't dare to recommend it to the regular user...
I also confirm the solution from Brian Rivers. Open Skype and on tab Groups delete all the SIP: entries at the end of the list. Then go to tab Relationships and delete also there all entries with "Presence unknown" status.
Then close Skype and open it again. For me it worked.
Hi All, it worked for me by removing all members from 'Relationship' tab who has status as '?'. Please check, it should work.
Thx Brian and Em - I am able to delete the tab Groups, but if I try to remove the names under Relationships they just hold on tight. :( Microsoft...please fix this for me and my users!

Same issue here, with external contacts. Extremely frustrating!
I confirm the solution from Brian Rivers. Open Skype and on tab Groups delete all the SIP: entries at the end of the list. Then go to tab Relationships and delete also there all entries with ? status.
Then close Skype and open it again. For me it worked, I also sync'd Outlook before I closed Skype.
